Orlando Pirates head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, has pledged to deliver a win against Mamelodi Sundowns in the much-anticipated sold-out MTN8 semi-final. The two South African football giants are set to face off at Orlando Stadium in Soweto for the first leg on Saturday afternoon (3 PM SA time).
The Buccaneers, who are the reigning champions of the MTN8, are coming into this high-stakes match after suffering two consecutive losses in the Betway Premiership. They lost 1-0 to Sekhukhune United in their season opener before falling 2-1 to Marumo Gallants. This poor start has led to frustration among supporters and has raised questions about Ouaddou’s coaching abilities.
Ouaddou, who took over from former coach Jose Riveiro in the off-season, has faced criticism for leaving key players like Thalente Mbatha, Deano Van Rooyen, and Tshegofatso Mabasa out of the matchday squad.

During a press conference, the former Marumo Gallants coach acknowledged the fans’ frustration but promised a turnaround. “I can understand our fans because they love the club, everywhere in the country and in Africa, they are passionate people and they are the 12th man,” Ouaddou said.
“So in every club in Africa, when you start the way we started, there’ll be disappointments, but we can promise them that we’re going to bounce back.”
He added, “We’re going to sweat on our shirts to represent the badge very well in the right way in order to bring them happiness; it’s only the beginning.”
In their quarter-final match, the Soweto-based team secured their place in the MTN8 semi-final by defeating Polokwane City FC 2-0.
