CHAN: Tight security, roads closed for Kenya vs Zambia clash

Ahead of Kenya’s final Group A fixture of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) against Zambia on Sunday, the National Police Services has issued notice of temporary traffic disruption in Nairobi.

According to a statement from the Service, several key roads will be closed and diversions put in place to ease movement around the city, particularly near match venues—Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium.

The statement read in part “Due to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), the National Police Service wishes to inform the public of temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Nairobi on Sunday, 17th August 2025, as follows”:

Roads that will be closed include;

1. Aerodrome Road – From Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

2. One lane of Lang’ata Road –From Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout.

3. One lane of Mombasa Road –From Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

Diversion Routes include;

1. Motorists from Mombasa Road heading to Nairobi CBD should use:
• Likoni Road -Enterprise Road (near General Motors) or
• Southern Bypass (via Ole Sereni).

2. Motorists from Lang’ata Road heading to Nairobi CBD should use:
• Raila Odinga Road or
• Muhoho Road (via Mbagathi Roundabout).

Thika Super Highway;

1. Motorists from Nairobi CBD heading to Thika Road (Ruiru/Juja/Thika) should use Kiambu Road at Exit 4; there will be a roadblock at Muthaiga.

2. Vehicles using Thika Superhighway heading to Mwiki should use Ruaka-Baba Ndogo-Lucky Summer-Nairobi River-Mwiki.

3. Vehicles from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru heading to Nairobi CBD should use Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road; there will be a roadblock at Ruiru Interchange.

4. Vehicles from Githurai to Nairobi CBD should use Githurai 44- Kiambu Road.

5. Vehicles from Nairobi CBD heading to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium (without vehicle access passes) should use the Service Lane at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
