Richards Bay FC head coach Ronnie Gabriel has revealed his team’s key motivational factor ahead of their upcoming match against Kaizer Chiefs: their last victory over the Soweto giants.
The two teams are set to clash on Tuesday, August 19, at FNB Stadium in Soweto, with three points at stake. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM SA time.
The Natal Rich Boyz are desperate for a turnaround after a rocky start to the 2025-26 Betway Premiership season. They’ve lost their first two matches, falling 2-1 to Marumo Gallants and then 1-0 to Golden Arrows.
In stark contrast, Chiefs are riding a wave of momentum, having secured perfect wins in their opening games—a 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC and a 1-0 win against Polokwane City.
Despite the daunting challenge of playing Chiefs at their home ground, Gabriel believes the memory of their last encounter will be a powerful tool. Richards Bay FC handed the Glamour Boys a 2-0 defeat at King Zwelithini Stadium in their previous meeting, and Gabriel plans to use that result to fuel his team’s belief.
“We have to look back at our last season’s performance against Chiefs, bring back those feelings, those memories, and believe that we can go there and beat Chiefs,” Gabriel stated. “We will have to go back into our thinking and see how we plan and use that as a motivation to know that we can go away from home and give Chiefs a game.”
He concluded with an optimistic note: “Hopefully, we will get a result away from home.”
