Kaizer Chiefs keep strong start alive with win over Richards Bay

Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United continue to lead the way in the early stages of South Africa’s Betway Premiership after each team made it three wins in a row to start the season on Tuesday.

Gastón Sirino’s excellent curled finish in the 57th minute completed a brilliant counter-attack and was all Chiefs needed to edge Richards Bay by a 1-0 score at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. The Uruguayan arrived to place his shot far beyond the reach of Richards Bay goalkeeper Jamal Salim Magoola after Wandile Duba’s cross was cleverly dummied by Nduduzi Shabalala.

While not being overly convincing in their three victories, Chiefs supporters will take the results with no questions asked as AmaKhosi continue to show their intentions of making a major improvement after a recurring theme of disappointing campaigns in recent years.

Sekhukhune thrashed top flight newcomers Orbit College with a 3-0 victory away from home at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto. Vusumuzi Mncube’s scored on both sides of halftime while Keletso Makgalwa produced a hat-trick of assists, setting up the final goal from Tshepo Mokoane as hosts Orbit College put up little resistance.

There were three other games on Tuesday. Polokwane City defeated Siwelele 1-0 away from home while TS Galaxy earned their first win in four competitive matches with a 3-1 result at Chippa United. In KwaZulu-Natal province, Durban City and local rivals Golden Arrows played to a 1-1 draw at Chatsworth Stadium.

Midweek action will finish up on Wednesday with three games. Reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns will face Magesi FC away while Orlando Pirates host Stellenbosch and AmaZulu take on Marumo Gallants.
