CHAN: Tanzania vs Morocco: Government appeals for fans to fill Mkapa Stadium

The government of Tanzania has appealed to football supporters to fill the 60,000-sitter Benjamin Mkapa Stadium to the brim when Taifa Stars takes on Morocco in their quarterfinal clash of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Friday.

Tanzania qualified for the knockout stages as winners of Group B with 10 points to book a date with the North Africans, and two-time CHAN champions, in the last eight. Morocco finished second in Group A behind hosts Kenya with nine points.

Tanzania’s Government Spokesperson and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa has urged fans to turn out in large numbers insisting that a vocal, sizable crowd can inspire the Taifa Stars to perform at their best and secure a place in the semi-finals.

“I appeal to Tanzanians to come to the stadium in large numbers. In the last two or three matches we have not recorded strong turnouts, and this has consequences. The Confederation of African Football measures a host nation’s readiness partly by crowd presence and that criterion is extremely important,” said Msigwa as quoted by Daily News.

“We have the ability to lift the CHAN trophy and in doing so we will make history and lay a solid foundation for the AFCON tournament.”

Taifa Stars topped their group unbeaten, recording wins against Burkina Faso (2-0), Mauritania (1-0), and Madagascar (2-1), alongside a 0-0 draw with the Central African Republic.
