Missed opportunities lead to scoreless draw with Zambia for U-20 AFCON hosts Egypt

2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations hosts Egypt slumped to another disappointing result on Saturday, drawing 0-0 with Group A foes Zambia in a match full of missed chances and poor finishing.

The hosts dominated proceedings for most of the match. Egypt controlled play in the first half but struggled to create clear opportunities in a theme that has become all too familiar for the North African side in the competition.

After being on the defensive in the first half, Zambia played themselves into the match more after the halftime break but the Young Chipolopolo also forgot their shooting boots at home. Captain Joseph Sabobo had a glorious opportunity but shot low and wide from eight yards out after excellent work from Pascal Phiri.

Soon after Sabobo’s miss, Egypt came closest to scoring when their captain had a chance. However, Ahmed Khaled “Kabaka” well struck shot from distance ratlled the crossbar with with Zambia keeper Levison Banda clearly beaten.

Egypt will likely need a victory to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive when they conclude their Group A fixtures next Friday against Tanzania. Zambia, with draws in their first two matches, next face Tanzania on Tuesday.

Group A Table

GP Points
Sierra Leone 3 7
Egypt 3 4
South Africa 2 3
Zambia 2 2
Tanzania 2 0
