Sundowns rejects R61 million Ribeiro bid; open to new talks

Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly turned down a substantial offer of approximately R61 million from Qatar SC for their star forward, Lucas Ribeiro Costa.

Despite the rejection, the South African champions have indicated a willingness to resume negotiations for the Brazilian.

The report by FARPost follows Ribeiro’s request to terminate his contract with Sundowns. Represented by renowned Belgian lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont, who famously won the 1995 Jean-Marc Bosman ruling, the player has escalated the matter to the FIFA Tribunal.

According to Dupont, Qatar SC’s offer was significantly higher than the player’s market value, which stands at around R51.1 million. The lawyer claims that Sundowns “attempted to drive up the price, again and again, in an unreasonable manner,” ultimately scuttling the deal.

In response, Sundowns stated their commitment to “continue with these discussions and negotiations,” suggesting they are open to finding a new agreement.

The club, however, maintains that it will not be pressured into accepting an offer below their valuation. Ribeiro, who joined Sundowns in 2023 for a fee of about R41 million, has a contract that runs until July 2028.

The reigning PSL Footballer of the Season has yet to play in the 2025/26 season. Since his arrival, he has been a key player for Sundowns, scoring 37 goals and providing 23 assists in 88 appearances across all competitions.
