Jose Riveiro, Al Ahly coach: “We had more than seven clear chances”

Al Ahly head coach Jose Riveiro admitted he expected a difficult challenge against Ghazl El Mahalla after the two teams played out a goalless draw in the fourth round of the Nile Egyptian League.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, as quoted by the club’s official website, Riveiro said:

“We tried to control the game and maintain possession against a team that is very well-organized defensively. We created many chances, including a shot from Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet that hit the crossbar, and another attempt from Achraf Dari in the second half.”

The Spanish coach expressed disappointment with the result, explaining:

“We are not happy with the draw because we wanted to win. The opponent defended in numbers, but we still had more than seven clear chances. Al Ahly always play attacking football with intensity and a strong desire to win.”

Al Ahly coach also praised the character of club captain Mohamed El Shenawy, who recently lost his father:

“It has been a very tough week for him, but he showed great strength of character. He is a true leader with the full confidence of the team, and he has already delivered many excellent performances for the club.”

Looking ahead, Riveiro stressed that his team remain focused on improving results:

“Our concentration is very high for the upcoming period. We are working continuously to improve both performances and outcomes.”

Jose Riveiro future with Al Ahly in doubt?

The stalemate raises further questions about Riveiro’s tenure. The Spanish coach has overseen six matches in all competitions so far—three in the league and three in the FIFA Club World Cup—recording just one win, four draws, and one defeat.

The draw leaves Al Ahly on five points from three matches in Nile Egyptian League, as they look to regain momentum in their title defense.
