Uche is reportedly on the verge to join English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers and is set to sign a five-year contract for a fee of €20 million.
The transfer saga came to a head following Getafe’s impressive 2-1 away victory against Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Monday night. Speaking after the game, the manager said he would not want the midfielder to leave the La Liga side this summer, adding that it would be a major problem for the squad.
“Let’s hope he doesn’t leave. I’m against him leaving; he’s a very important player, and this becomes more difficult every day. If Uche leaves, we have a very serious problem. We can’t be at the mercy of selling a player as important as Uche.”
The club’s president, Ángel Torres, had earlier confirmed Uche’s departure to the press as a necessity due to financial regulations. Getafe is reportedly facing “salary limit issues” and is under pressure to offload players in order to register new signings and comply with La Liga regulations.
“I’m forced to sell him; I have no other choice. We’re not in favor of selling the best players. I think we’re ruining La Liga. They’re forcing us to sell. We’ve had to sell [Omar] Alderete and now Uche, but the rule is the rule and we have to abide by it.”
Uche’s departure, though a significant financial gain for the club, is seen as a major blow to Getafe’s ambitions. Having joined the club last summer for a mere €550,000 from third tier side Ceuta, Uche has quickly become a standout performer.
While reports suggest the player himself is happy at Getafe, the club’s financial situation and the agreement with Wolves, reportedly brokered by super-agent Jorge Mendes, seem to have made the move inevitable.
