Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Mohau Nkota has opened up about his unforgettable debut for Al-Ettifaq, where he scored just seven minutes into the new Saudi Pro League season.
The 20-year-old was a standout performer as his team secured a 2-1 victory over Al Kholood on Thursday night.
Nkota’s brilliant left-footed strike from the edge of the box broke the deadlock, although Al Kholood quickly responded with an equaliser. It took a second-half goal from former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum to seal the win for Al-Ettifaq. The young South African, who joined the club in July, played the full 90 minutes.
Speaking after the match, Nkota expressed his gratitude to his management, teammates, and the fans for their support.
“It’s a very good league, competitive, so I’m very happy to be here,” he said. “I have a very good group of people, my teammates and technical team. I’d like to thank them for the opportunity they gave me.”
He also extended a special thank you to the Al-Ettifaq faithful, stating, “Thank you very much for welcoming me. I’m very happy with today’s match. The first match is very important.”
Nkota’s impressive start could be a boost for Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos as the national team prepares for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria.
Nkota also shared his secrets to adapting so quickly to his new club.
“You know, sometimes as a person you need to make yourself happy,” he explained. “Wherever you go to join a new team, feel comfortable. Don’t be scared to be around the players. I came in the pre-season, and I showed them what kind of person I am. And they welcomed me well. I was very happy to be in this group of people. I came because Ettifaq welcomed me very well.”
