‘Khune’s record Kaizer Chiefs’ keeper takes into Golden Arrows game

Kaizer Chiefs FC and their goalkeeper Brandon Petersen have been quietly breaking their records in this promising start to the 2025-2026 Betway Premiership marathon.

More will be expected from the Soweto giants when they face Lamontville Golden Arrows on Saturday.

The Soweto giants, with Petersen between the sticks, seem to been getting back to their feet following a decade of underwhelming performances.

Nabi’s near-impossible task at Chiefs

After chopping and changing coaches with little success, Chiefs brought on board Nasreddine Nabi last season. The task for the Tunisian was very clear but not simple: he was charged with reviving the Betway Premiership team’s flagging fortunes.

From the league’s perspective, the Glamour Boys once again limped and crawled last season. Chiefs, for all their rich history and pride, settled for a distant ninth place while collecting a spoonful 32 points in the league.

This was way too behind habitual champions Mamelodi Sundowns’ 72 points’ tally on the 16-member log table.

Chiefs consolation last season

However, there was solace among AmaKhosi’s faithful as Nabi delivered at least a trophy at the Naturena—Chiefs won the Nedbank Cup after humbling their traditional rivals Orlando Pirates by a 2-1 margin in the final.

It was the first worthwhile silverware for the giants in a decade.

This season, there are indications that Chiefs have built on the form, transferring it into the Betway Premiership. In the process, Petersen too, has been writing his own piece of history.

Chiefs go into Saturday’s match against Arrows after coming back unscatched from a mid-week game against Sundowns following a 0-0 stalemate.

The mid-week result maintained Nabi team’s unbeaten run. It also set a personal milestone for Petersen, according to the club.

“Chiefs have kept four successive clean sheets in their opening four league games of a season for the first time since 1979. Chiefs kept their fifth successive clean sheet for the first time since the 2019/20 season,” the club’s website reads.

Petersen chasing Khune’s record

Adding to that, the team’s goalkeeper seems to be getting close to the levels of the legendary Itumeleng Khune.

“Brandon Petersen has kept his fifth clean sheet in a row; the first time in his career he has done so,” Chiefs’ website added.

“Petersen is the first Chiefs goalkeeper since Itumeleng Khune in 2016/17 to keep five successive clean-sheets.”

Chiefs have also reached 10 points in four games this season, two matches faster than last season.
