CHAN: Senegal claim third place after defeating Sudan in penalty kicks

Senegal failed to defend their title at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) but earned third place following Friday’s 4-2 penalty kick shootout victory over Sudan after a 1-1 draw through ninety minutes in Kampala, Uganda.

It was an even match throughout with each team enjoying stretches of strong play. Sudan were the team who took the lead inside six minutes, however, when awful marking from the Senegalese defense left towering striker Mohamed Teya wide open to head in Abdel Raouf’s corner kick from six yards out.

2022 champions Senegal responded well, proceeding to dominate the majority of the first half. A flurry of opportunities arrived before halftime with Sudan goalkeeper Mohamed Elnour doing well to save at his near post from Oumar Ba’s sliding effort. Moments earlier, Amadou Coly had a good chance but saw his shot deflected wide.

But the Local Lions of Teranga continued to push after halftime and were rewarded around the hour mari. Ousseynou Seck’s cross from the right wing found the head of Mbaye Ndiaye, who looped his header over the head of Elnour as the Sudan keeper came out to claim the cross.

Both teams had opportunities in the final half hour but remained level with a penalty shootout arriving following the full time whistle. A miss by Sudan star Walieldin Khidir on the opening spot kick set the tone with Senegal converting all four of their attempts while Sudan also missed their third penalty.

The final will take place on Saturday (15:00 GMT) when Morocco face Madagascar in Nairobi, Kenya.
