ZESCO Ndola Girls coach William Zulu says he knew ‘where to touch’ to beat Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies 2-1 in South Africa on Friday.
The Zambian champions came from behind to stun the fancied two-time winners in the semifinal of the CAF Women’s Champions League: COSAFA Qualifiers played at AW Muller Stadium in Johannesburg.
In a post-match interview with COSAFA media, Zulu said he drew lessons from a Group A game they lost 1-0 to Sundowns.
“In the first game we played I saw it coming even though we lost 1-0,” he said. “I had in mind that it is a very technical team and very strong so as we were coming, I said: don’t open up. Play a closed game.”
The Zambian trainer then explained how he analysed Godfrey Sapula’s girls in the build up to the semifinal.
“I watched that [group stage] game we played against Sundowns almost two hours, and I knew where to touch. I told the girls that let us not get intimidated. I told them: ‘just go there and enjoy that game.”
Sapula admitted that his side did not do enough to win the game. ZESCO booked a date with Gaborone United Ladies in the final scheduled for Sunday at the same venue.
The champions from Botswana qualified for the final after defeating Mozambique’s Costa do Sol 3-1 also on Friday.
