Uganda’s women’s team capped off a fairytale return to the Homeless World Cup by storming to the 2025 title with a commanding 6-0 victory over nine-time champions Mexico in the final at Rådhusplassen, Oslo.

Appearing for the first time in 14 years, Uganda defied the odds to become only the third African nation to lift the women’s crown, joining Kenya and South Africa in the history books.

The team topped Group B with 14 points before brushing aside India in the quarterfinals, overcoming Romania in the semis, and dismantling Mexico in the grand finale. Their spirited journey was led by a resilient squad comprising Eva Nagaayi, Josephine Ndagire, Viola Namuddu, Cissy Nakato, Stella Namisango, Jemimah Twesigye, Sharifah Kitali, and Shadia Nambasa.

Adding to their triumph, Uganda also scooped the prestigious FIFPRO Fair Play Award in recognition of their exemplary sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was quick to hail the champions, stating: “This is a historic moment, not just for Uganda but for Africa and the Homeless World Cup. Uganda’s victory shows how football can inspire hope, change perceptions, and bring people together.”

The 20th edition of the Homeless World Cup brought together 63 teams from 48 nations, with over 500 players competing in Oslo.

Uganda’s latest achievement comes hot on the heels of their successful defense of the Africa Women’s Cup title in Nairobi earlier this year. On the men’s side, Egypt also wrote history by edging Portugal 4-3 in a dramatic final.

Launched in 2003, the Homeless World Cup continues to use football as a powerful tool to empower marginalized communities and transform lives across the globe.
