Comoros bounced back from defeat earlier this week in 2026 World Cup qualifying to down Central African Republic with a 2-0 result in Morocco on Sunday.
First half strikes from Youssouf M’Changama and Myziane Maolida condemned Central African Republic to eight competitive matches without a victory while Les Coelacanthes kept their World Cup hopes alive in Group I. Comoros move back into second place after ending their September FIFA window on a winning note.
Central African Republic got off to a positive start but Les Fauves failed to convert their opportunities and paid the price. Veteran playmaker M’Changama, currently out of contract following his release from French Ligue 2 side Troyes at the end of the 2024-25 season, scored his first goal of the World Cup qualification campaign in the 20th minute with a firm low effort after an excellent assist from Maolida.
The island nation then doubled their lead close to halftime. CAR goalkeeper Mauril Abimala did well to save from Faïz Selemani but the winger was able to track down the rebound and cross for Maolida. Abimala received no favors from his defenders, who failed to mark Maolida as he received Selemani’s service and punched in from close range.
Despite a 0-3 defeat to Mali in their opening match of the September window, Comoros remain firmly in the chase with only one point separating them from Group I leaders Ghana who will host Mali on Monday. Madagascar can overtake Comoros to reclaim second place if they defeat bottom side Chad, also on Monday.
