World Cup (Q): Mozambique bounce back with win over Botswana

Mozambique bounced back after a heavy loss in Kampala with a crucial 2-0 win over Botswana in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group G encounter at the Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto in Maputo. Chiquinho Conde’s charges got three massive points in the race for World Cup qualification.

It was an evenly matched game, with the ball rolling in the middle of the park and few goal-scoring opportunities. Mozambique took the lead early when Witi scored from the box after being set up by Stanley Ratifo six minutes into the game. The first half saw a midfield battle as both nations struggled to create chances.

After the resumption, the Zebras were the better side, but creating chances was a tough task. The home side sat back and defended for much of the second 45 minutes.

Second-half substitute Faisal Bangal doubled the lead with a cool finish following a through ball from Pepo in the 71st minute. Mozambique goalie Ernani was called upon to make two important saves from Mothusi Cooper and Gilbert Baruti of Botswana.

The result temporarily took Mozambique to second place in Group G with 15 points, three points shy of leaders Algeria. Botswana are not out of the playoff spots, but they are now in danger as they sit fifth with nine points.

Uganda host Somalia while Guinea host Algeria in Casablanca, Morocco later today to complete the eighth round of games from the group.
