KV Kortrijk sporting director explains Mailula signing

KV Kortrijk sporting director Nils Vanneste has explained that Cassius Mailula’s experience was a key factor in the club’s decision to sign him.

The South African attacking midfielder joins the Belgian side on a season-long loan from Major League Soccer (MLS) club Toronto FC, with an option to make the move permanent.

“Mailula is an offensive player who can play in multiple positions,” Vanneste said in a statement on Monday. “He played at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup this summer, where he also scored.”

The 24-year-old’s move to Kortrijk follows a loan spell with Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club last season. During his time at Wydad, the former Mamelodi Sundowns star featured in 36 games across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing seven assists.

Mailula first made his move abroad in July 2023 when he signed for Toronto FC from Betway Premiership champions Sundowns.

KV Kortrijk, who currently sits atop the Belgian First Division B with 12 points and a perfect record after four matches, expressed its delight at securing the services of the talented midfielder.

“KV Kortrijk is pleased to announce the arrival of South African Cassius Mailula (24). The fast and agile attacking midfielder joins our guys until the end of the season. KVK also negotiated a purchase option,” said the club.

“Mailula, originally from Ga-Molepo in the Limpopo province of South Africa, reached the professional level through the prestigious Mamelodi Sundowns academy. In his breakthrough season (2022-2023), he scored nine goals in 17 league games and was named Young Player of the Season in the South African highest division.

“Mailula has also already made steps at the international level: in 2023, he made his debut for the South African national team. In addition, he is known as a polyvalent attacker: deployable as a centre forward, shadow striker and on the flanks.”

Meanwhile, Mailula added: “Hey, KV Kortrijk fans, I’m looking forward to meeting you guys soon. I want to take this moment to thank Toronto FC for making this deal happen. I also want to thank my management and my family for everything. I’m very happy and excited to start this new journey with you guys.”
