World Cup (Q): Opportunity missed for Gabon in home draw with Ivory Coast

Gabon had a brilliant opportunity at home in Franceville on Tuesday but could only manage a 0-0 draw against Group F rivals Ivory Coast in 2026 World Cup qualifying.

The Panthers remain one point back of Group F favorites Ivory Coast following the result, which came after a frustrating match that saw both teams fail to finish their limited opportunities.

Occasional sparks of attacking play from Amad Diallo and Nicolas Pépé created uncertainty for the Ivorians against the Gabonese defense, which did not benefit from a shaky performance by goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba. However, Mbaba was protected by a strong effort from veteran captain Bruno Ecuele Manga to keep the Elephants off the scoresheet.

It was a similar story on the other end. Denis Bouanga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were left frustrated. Bouanga created danger with his pace on the wing but could not obtain a clear look at goal. Gabon came close in the 61st minute when midfield maestro Guelor Kanga curled his effort from distance just wide of Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana’s goal. Substitute forward Shaby Babicka came closest in the 87th minute with a shot off the post.

Ivory Coast had their best chance ten minutes later. Mbaba came out to play a cross from Pépé but his attempt at a punch came off the back of Ecuele Manga, who recovered admirably to block Diallo’s follow up attaempt with Mbaba scrambling back into position.

Ivory Coast are now in a good position to finish the job of qualification to the World Cup finals. The Elephants travel to face minnows Seychelles in their opening match from October’s finale before hosting Kenya with two victories good enough to keep out of reach.

Gabon finish up next month against The Gambia away from home before hosting Burundi. Barring a surprise result for the Ivorians, it appears that Gabon will have to be content with a place in the qualfication playoff as Group F runners-up.

Group F Table (8 of 10 matches played)

  2. Gabon- 19 points
  3. Burundi- 10 points
  4. The Gambia- 10 points
