Kenya national team striker Michael Olunga reached another milestone in the history of Kenyan football after his brace against Seychelles enabled him to move level with legend Dennis Oliech in international goals for the East African nation.
The towering Olunga, who plays for Al-Arabi in the Qatar Stars League, led the way for Harambee Stars as he scored two goals, one from the penalty spot and the second from a powerful header as Kenya humiliated Seychelles 5-0 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Kasarani Stadium.
The other goals were scored by Austria-bound Ryan Ogam, who grabbed a brace and Collins Sichenje. Olunga’s double helped him to reach 34 goals, level with retired Oliech, and he is now one goal away from breaking the mark held by former Gor Mahia striker William Ouma (35 goals).
Olunga further surpassed AFC Leopards legend Elijah Lidonde (33 goals) in the process.
“It is a great feeling to reach the level, but to be honest it was not in mind when I scored the two goals,” Olunga told Pan-Africa Football after the game. “I was not thinking of the record, I was only thinking of how I can help the team recover from the Gambia defeat.”
“The defeat against Gambia left a sour taste in our campaign and all we wanted was to recover, and I thank God we did it in style against a very strong side. It was not easy, but when we scored the third goal, I knew we could get more.”
The victory lifted Kenya to nine points from eight matches. They remained fifth in Group E, 11 points behind leaders Ivory Coast.
