Following his impressive performances during the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), Gor Mahia defender Alphonse Omija has sealed a transfer move to Tunisian outfit Etoile Sportive du Sahel.

A statement from the North African club confirmed: “Warmly Welcome to Harambee Stars defender Alphonse Omija. Let’s shine together with Étoile Sportive du Sahel.”

Before Kenya played against Seychelles in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture at Kasarani Stadium on Tuesday, coach Benni McCarthy confirmed Omija had been granted permission to travel to Tunisia, where he was scheduled to sign for the club.

“We also had one player leave the camp, but I okayed the decision because, it was an opportunity for him to join a club in Tunisia, and it was a really short window, and the transfer window was closing, so I thought if the player failed to do medical, he ends up losing the opportunity after a great show during CHAN,” said McCarthy.

“It was only the right thing for me to do, to give the player permission to travel, and allow him to undergo medical and make the move to a very good, decent Tunisian side, and that it Alphonse (Omija), so he is left the camp, the day before yesterday, so I will miss two defenders, but everybody else is fit, healthy, and good to go.”

Omija was part of the Kenya squad that reached the knockout stages of CHAN on their debut after defeating DR Congo and Morocco on their way to topping Group A unbeaten.
