Orlando Pirates have reportedly rejected a substantial transfer offer from Russian Premier League side FC Akron Tolyatti for talented star Relebohile Mofokeng.
The Buccaneers turned down a bid valued at $1.5 million (approximately R26 million) for the highly sought-after 20-year-old.
The decision signals that the Betway Premiership giants Pirates are determined to hold on to one of the continent’s most promising young talents, with Mofokeng now expected to remain at the club beyond the current transfer window.
Since his promotion from the DStv Diski Challenge two years ago, Mofokeng has enjoyed a meteoric rise. He has become a pivotal player for Pirates, making 96 first-team appearances and contributing 18 goals and 22 assists across all competitions.
Mofokeng’s exceptional form has also earned him two consecutive Young Player of the Year awards in the league and nine senior caps for the South Africa national team.
The Russian club’s offer is the latest in a string of approaches for the dynamic winger. Over recent months, clubs from around the world—including Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv, and MLS side Minnesota United—have all been linked with the player.
However, the interest from Israel has reportedly cooled, and the MLS transfer window has since closed, leaving FC Akron as the most recent club to test Pirates’ resolve.
