President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni this week hosted the Uganda Cranes CHAN 2024 team at State House Entebbe in recognition of their historic achievement at the tournament.
The event was graced by State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, and FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo, among other dignitaries.
During the ceremony, President Museveni confirmed that he had fulfilled his earlier promise of Shs1.2Bn for every victory the team registered at the tournament. Uganda secured two wins against Guinea and Niger, earning a total payout of Shs2.4Bn (approximately USD631, 600).
“I promised and I am implementing. Every time you win, I would give 30 million each, and I have already put the money on your accounts,” Museveni affirmed.
Each player and official received about Shs30 million per win, adding to the $11,000 that FUFA had already awarded every squad member for their performance.
Uganda’s CHAN campaign ended with a narrow 1-0 loss to eventual champions Senegal at Namboole. Despite the exit, the team made history as the first Ugandan side to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.
Looking ahead, Uganda will turn focus to the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, where they face Botswana and Algeria before heading into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
