Ghana international Antoine Semenyo has confessed Bournemouth were not at their best form despite securing a 2-1 Premier League victory against Brighton & Hove Albion at Vitality Stadium on Saturday.
Alex Scott’s stunning strike and Semenyo’s goal from the penalty spot ensured that saw the Cherries win the game to register their best start to a Premier League season after four games.
The Ghanaian forward’s decisive strike secured the Cherries’ their first victory over the Seagulls since April 2024.
“The manager said in the week that we had not beaten Brighton in a while,” Semenyo told the club’s official website after the game. “We had to do what we did against Tottenham Hotspur, it was an ugly win in some stages but a win nonetheless.
“It wasn’t us at our best and like I said, it was pretty ugly! The manager said it might go this way – it did and we found a way to win. It’s a really good side to show in our game.
“The mood is perfect, everyone is perfect and enjoying training and buzzing to get involved. You can’t ask for more than that and everyone is really happy.”
On taking the penalty on behalf of regular taker Justin Kluiver after Evanilson was fouled by Jan Paul van Hecke in the second half, Semenyo said: “I don’t know. We have to wait and see, Justin scored a lot last season so he may take them. But I had to score and stepped up today, which was nice.
“But it’s a team game, I have to do what I can for the team, today I got the opportunity but Justin hasn’t missed one so who knows!”
