Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has attributed the Soweto giants’ historic triumph in the MTN8 final to the unity among the players.
The Buccaneers secured a fourth consecutive MTN8 title after defeating Stellenbosch FC 3-0 at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Saturday evening. They are the first PSL team to secure the title four times consecutively.
The Bafana Bafana striker, Mabasa, was once again on the scoresheet on the night, as he had been during last season’s final against the same side, Stellies.
Pirates’ goals came from substitute players in Mabasa and Man of the Match Tshepang Moremi, who scored a brace. The 28-year-old Mabsa says the depth in the squad was evident in the impact of the substitutes.
“It’s [the unity] not only in this game [MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC]. It has happened in previous finals and in league matches,” Mabasa.
“Players have come from the bench and made an impact. So we really have a good squad depth. Everyone is working and in training, and honestly, if it were possible, everyone would play at the same time. Unfortunately, football only allows 11 players to play, and everyone else has to be ready.”
“Like I said, the unity within the group, the support that we have for one another, we continue to push one another, and regardless of who plays, everyone gives their 100 per cent.,” he said. “It’s really a special thing to be a part of. Hopefully, we can continue being great.
Meanwhile, Mabasa also admitted that coming off the bench to score will go a long way in boosting his confidence.
“It brings a lot of confidence. This is history; it’s something that can’t be written again. As a striker, like I always say, I pride myself on the goals that I score, and every chance that I get, I try to put it at the back of the net.”
