The Tunisian Ligue 1 Professionnelle has introduced Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the first time during the fifth-week matches over the weekend.
The North African nation has joined a few other African countries in using the technology in its domestic football league.
The league had sought to introduce VAR before the start of the new season, but some procedures caused a delay of a few weeks. According to the state-owned La Presse, a Chinese firm won the tender to provide the VAR equipment.
Week five games saw VAR interventions. Matches between US Ben Guerdane vs. CA Bizertin, US Monastir vs. Etoile du Sahel, and Stade Tunisien vs. Espérance de Tunis required VAR intervention. Three questionable penalties were overturned during the encounters.
Fans and clubs have often criticised the standard of refereeing in Tunisia. The league and clubs have usually been at odds due to officiating. The league now hopes that the changes made can at least rectify some mistakes and enhance the quality of refereeing in the North African nation.
