Ivorian club FC San Pedro got their CAF Confederation Cup campaign off to a good start on Friday with a 1-0 first leg victory over Cameroon’s Aigle Royal in Yaoundé from their first round clash.
Abi Kassi Théodor’s goal in the 56th minute gave San Pedro the advantage and puts the Coupe de Côte d’Ivoire champions in a strong position before the second leg back home at the Laurent Pokou Stadium. Kassi executed an excellent passing combination with Koffi Yao Wilfried before rolling his finish past Aigle Royal goalkeeper Ismael Fansu.
The hosts failed to cause trouble for San Pedro, who looked more sharp with four league matches under their belt while the Cameroonian club have yet to begin their domestic campaign. Aigle Royal’s best opportunity came in the 67th minute when Mistro Yamdjeu sent his free kick just wide from twenty yards out.
The visitors should have left with a 2-0 victory but after earning a penalty kick late on, subsitute Amon Mathieu sent his spot kick into orbit.
The two teams will clash again on September 27 in San Pedro, where the Ivorian team will be favorites to advance and face either Benin’s Coton FC or Black Man Warrior of Liberia.
