The cup kings from Zambia face Gabonese side Football Canon 105 (FC 105) Libreville in the Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg game at Franceville Stadium.
Looking ahead to the match, Mkhonta admitted that his team has little knowledge of the Gabonese hosts.
“We know very well that it is not going to be an easy game since we are playing away and we don’t know them,” he told ZESCO’s media.
“May be them they have been checking on our videos and everything but we don’t not know them. Our coaches did their very best to prepare us for this game. We are ready for this game and we are going to do our best. We know that we are not representing only ZESCO as a club but the whole nation.”
The skipper, nonetheless, painted a picture of confidence in camp ahead of the meeting with FC 105.
“The morale is very good and the spirit is very high. All the players are pushing themselves. Everyone wants to participate in the game,” Mkhonta added.
The skipper is expected to lead ZESCO from the back alongside fellow Chipolopolo defender Kabaso Chongo and Benedict Chepeshi.
The return leg is expected to be played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola next week on September 28. The overall winner over the two legs will advance to the next round.
ZESCO gave travelled with a strong squad also comprising star players such as midfielders Kelvin Kampamba and strikers Alex Ngonga.
The Ndola-based club has a rich history in continental competitions after making nine appearances. Domestically boast nine Super League titles, and seven ABSA Cups.
