Nayef Aguerd scores the winner for Le Classique winners Marseille

Nayef Aguerd’s early header was all Olympique Marseille needed on Monday to defeat rivals Paris Saint-Germain in a delayed Le Classique derby clash from France’s Ligue 1.

A one-day delay caused by bad weather did nothing to lower the fierce spirit of the rivalry. Mason Greenwood’s cross was deflected high into the air and the Moroccan defender won his aerial duel with PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier to nod in the only goal of the match on four minutes, snapping a five-match losing streak for Les Minots to the European club champions.

It was a tense atmosphere at the Velodrome as PSG pushed harder and harder for an equalizer after suffering the early blow. However, Aguerd and the Marseille defense kept their focus and prevented the winners of the last four Ligue 1 titles from creating a clear opportunity to test goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

The final half hour saw PSG lay siege to the OM goal with the hosts limited to counter-attacks through substitute forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. OM coach Roberto de Zerbi was also issued a red card at the start of second half stoppage time.

But effective game management and strong defending was the theme for victorious Marseille, who now have nine points from three wins and two defeats through two matches. PSG’s first defeat of the 2025-26 campaign leaves them level with AS Monaco on twelve points.

Monday marked Aguerd’s second consecutive league match with a goal after joining from West Ham United at the beginning of the month. Marseille will now look to build on their momentum when they travel to face Strasbourg on Friday before hosting Ajax in the UEFA Champions League on September 30.
