Key returns bolster Broos’s preliminary squad for decisive World Cup qualifiers

With the tantalising prospect of a return to the FIFA World Cup stage within touching distance, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has named his preliminary squad ahead of the two decisive final qualifiers for the 2026 tournament.

The announcement made on Tuesday marks a critical juncture in South Africa’s campaign, as the national team prepares for a two-match sequence that could secure their place among the world’s elite next year in North America.

South Africa currently holds a commanding position atop Group C, having amassed 17 points from their qualification journey thus far.

This strong performance has put them on the brink of glory, needing just a point from their remaining fixtures to book their ticket to the global showpiece. Broos’s selection reflects the high stakes, blending the proven experience of his core players with the inclusion of key figures returning from injury and a handful of burgeoning talents.

The final two fixtures will see Bafana Bafana first face neighbouring Zimbabwe on Friday, 10 October, at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. In a unique logistical arrangement, this fixture—technically a home match for the Warriors—will be played on South African soil, a result of venue availability issues in Zimbabwe. The team will then travel to Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga for their final qualifier against Rwanda on Monday, 13 October.

A Return of Key Personnel to the Bafana Bafana Set-Up

A notable feature of the preliminary squad is the return of two crucial defenders who have been sidelined recently. Mamelodi Sundowns‘ dynamic right-back, Khuliso Mudau, is back on the list after missing the qualifiers against Nigeria and Lesotho. His absence was attributed to a lack of match fitness following a club-related issue, and his return will provide a significant boost to the defensive line and attacking width. Mudau’s relentless work rate and defensive solidity make him a vital component of Broos’s tactical setup.

Joining him is Polokwane City FC defender  Thabang Matuludi, who receives a call-up after a prolonged spell on the sidelines due to injury. Matuludi’s inclusion is a testament to his recovery and the coaching staff’s continued faith in his abilities. Both players add valuable depth and options at a critical time in the campaign.
