Mamelodi Sundowns fall to first league defeat at Golden Arrows

Mamelodi Sundowns produced an impotent display on Wednesday, falling to their first Betway Premiership defeat of the 2025-26 season with a 0-1 result at Golden Arrows.

In form Ivorian forward Junior Dion’s first half header was all Arrows needed to emerge victorious against Sundowns for the first time since 2019. Dion rose up to nod in Philangenkosi Khumalo’s corner kick before holding on for the shock result.

More concerning signs on display for Mamelodi Sundowns

The signs have been there this season that something is different about Sundowns, who have struggled in matches against the likes of Kaizer Chiefs and Marumo Gallants as well as the MTN 8 semifinals where they fell to Orlando Pirates. However, Wednesday’s result may truly set the alarm bells ringing for supporters who watched their high-priced attack slump to another underwhelming effort.

Arrows were more than content to allow Sundowns to keep possession and look to exploit open spaces. Dion’s constant energy and runs in the penalty are caused plenty of danger for Sundowns and the Ivorian could have had more goals on the day.

The halftime introduction of new signing Nuno Santos did little to inspire Sundowns, as well as the arrival of Lebo Mothiba and academy producet Bennet Mokoena. But the ease with which Arrows were able to hold onto their lead will be the most striking characteristic of Wednesday’s capitulation by Sundowns.

Sundowns will look to bounce back on Saturday at home when they take on Richards Bay. They remain a point back of league leaders Sekhukhune United, who have played two less matches, and could be overtaken by Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates if their poor form continues.
