Akor Adams finally opened his goal account in La Liga after coming on as a substitute to score a late match winner in Sevilla’s 1-0 victory at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.
After struggling with injuries since being signed from French side Montpellier for €5.5 million last season, the Nigerian striker boosted his cause with an important goal to give Los Rojiblancos a third consecutive victory away from home in league play.
A defensive breakdown from hosts Rayo allowed Jose Angel Carmona to get behind on the right wing and his cross found Adams, who fired in off the crossbar to put Sevilla ahead in the 87th minute.
Opportunities have been limited for the 25-year-old, who thrived in Norwegian football before moving to Sevilla following a two-season spell at Montpellier. He has only been available for 9 out of 24 league matches since his big transfer to the Andalusian giants due to injuries.
But after showing signs of promise in pre-season, Adams was given full matches in Sevilla’s opening two La Liga games this season, producing an assist before another muscle injury kept him out of two games. Sevilla have not counted the towering forward out yet and Sunday’s goal may give him another starting opportunity for the next match, a difficult test at home against FC Barcelona on October 5.
