The Somali flagbearers achieved a magnificent result in the Kenyan capital, but they bowed out of the competition. Police had a 3-1 lead from the first leg, and many expected they would win the tie in convincing fashion. The contrary happened, as Somali international Marsis gave Mogadishu City the lead in the 33rd minute.
Things got worse for the home side as Ibrahim Bangura doubled the lead from the spot following the resumption. Kenya Police held on to storm into the second round on the away goals rule.
Mogadishu City Club came close to overturning their first-leg defeat in style. Fans of Kenya Police on Facebook questioned the club’s defeat at home but the Kenyan champions are through to the final round of qualifying where they will face either Sudan’s Al Hilal Omdurman or Jamus of South Sudan, who face off for the second leg of their clash later on Sunday after drawing 0-0 in the first leg.
