Kaizer Chiefs supporters were left dismayed as AmaKhosi wasted another decent performance with comically bad finishing in Wednesday’s 1-1 Betway Premiership draw with visiting AmaZulu.
The visitors from Durban got off to a dream start with Zimbabwean sensation Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya’s fourth goal of the season in the 21st minute but what followed was strong play from the hosts combined with incompetence in the finishing department.
Mduduzi Shabalala spared the hosts’ blushes with his equalizer in the 32nd minute, less than two minutes after Makabi Lilepo’s penalty kick was saved by Usuthu goalkeeper Darren Johnson.
But the next significant moment appeared too ridiculous to believe. Just before halftime, Pule Mmodi was played in on goal by a clever pass from Shabalala and did well to lift his finish over Johnson. However, while pursuing the ball to the goal line, Khanyisa Mayo inexplicably added a final touch just before the ball crossed the line while in an offside position. The linesman correctly flagged for offsides, leaving Mayo to endure glares from his teammates at a moment of selfishness and stupidity.
Johnson’s excellent goalkeeping performance and Mayo’s moment of madness gave way to a dull second half. Both teams created half chances but the match settled down as Chiefs let two points slip away like last week against Marumo Gallants.
Both teams next turn their attention to the Carling Knockout cup before the international break. Chiefs will face Stellenbosch on Sunday while AmaZulu take on Magesi FC on the same day.
