Tusker FC’s poor start to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League continued after they settled for a 0-0 draw against Mathare United in their matchday three fixture at Dandora Stadium on Wednesday.
The Brewers went into the fixture seeking first win of the campaign having suffered back-to-back defeats. They started off their campaign with a shock 2-0 defeat against KCB, who are under their former coach Robert Matano, before losing 2-1 against Posta Rangers despite scoring first.
Tusker coach Charles Okere made changes to his team as he sought to find the right winning formula, with Ronny Otieno handed his debut while defender Francis Oduor and forward Curtis Wekesa were handed their first starts.
With Chris Erambo and George Kaddu rested due to injury concerns, Dennis ‘Decha’ Wanjala and Fabian Adikiny were also handed first starts of the season.
The team was on the offensive from the onset and should have been ahead after just four minutes. Wanjala delivered a brilliant ball off a freekick on the left, finding the run of Charles Momanyi but the skipper’s thumping header sailed wide.
The Brewers were denied by the post and an off-the-line clearance. Eric Kapaito made a brilliant turn inside the box and struck a low shot on his weaker left foot but the ball came off the post. Ronny picked up the rebound and slapped it on target, but the Mathare backline threw a body to keep the ball off the net.
On the other end, keeper Brian Opondo was called into action making a brilliant double save with Mathare being very dangerous in their first foray in our defensive third.
Oguta would have won the game with less than five minutes to play when he made a great run to meet with a lofted ball by Francis, but he couldn’t keep his header down with the keeper at his mercy.
Tusker will return to action with a visit to face Shabana, who are unbeaten from the opening two matches and are topping the table with six points. The two sides will face off at Gusii Stadium on Sunday.
