Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Remo Stars suffered their second loss of the 2025-26 season as Abia Warriors defeated them 2-0 at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Thursday.
Remo Stars, who kicked off one of the two rescheduled Matchday 5 fixtures, came into the match riding high on their qualification to the next round of the CAF Champions League after a victory over US Zilimadjou 5-0 on aggregate.
The 2024-25 champions got their first clear chance in the 15th minute when Samuel Anakwe’s pass found Alex Oyowah who attempted to finish past the hosts’ goalkeeper.
However, it was Abia Warriors who were looking to bounce back from their CAF Confederation Cup elimination over the weekend when Emeka Obioma found the back of the net after a sloppy clearance in the 29th minute, sending them into a one-goal lead at the halftime break.
Daniel Ogunmodede’s boys attempted to bounce back in the early minutes of the second half but Warriors goalkeeper Okiemute Odah was up to the task.
The lead was doubled when Suraj Lawal was brought down in the box. Sunday Megwo stepped up and calmly slotted it home to seal the game for coach Imama Amapakabo side.
