Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic has unveiled his squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and Uganda, with Luca Zidane – son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane – making headlines after receiving his first call-up to the national team.

The Granada goalkeeper, who recently switched his sporting nationality to represent Algeria, has been called for the October training camp and is expected to compete strongly for a starting role.

Petkovic defends Zidane selection

Speaking at a press conference, Petkovic backed his decision to include Zidane despite questions over the choice.

“I believe I selected this player because he deserves it,” the coach said. “I am convinced that, thanks to his qualities – and because he is someone we’ve been monitoring for a long time – he can bring something extra to the squad.”

When asked if Zidane could immediately become Algeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Petkovic was cautious: “It’s too early to say if he will be number one.”

A chance for Luca Zidane to prove himself

The coach admitted he has not been fully satisfied with Algeria’s goalkeeping performances since taking charge, and highlighted Zidane’s arrival as an opportunity to prove himself.

“I will give new players the chance to prove themselves in this important position for the national team,” Petkovic added. “The door is open. I’ve called up 26 players, including several youngsters who need to gain experience.”

Algeria will face Somalia and Uganda as they continue their push to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, with Zidane’s debut one of the most anticipated storylines of the international window.
