Pirates vs Magesi headlines Carling Knockout quarter-finals draw

The field for the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals is officially set following a weekend of drama, upsets, and high-scoring affairs, culminating in the draw on Sunday evening.

The Round of 16 delivered one of the competition’s biggest shocks when Marumo Gallants stunned giants Mamelodi Sundowns, knocking them out of the tournament via a tense penalty shootout at the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday.

In contrast, Orlando Pirates secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Siwelele FC at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday to ensure their spot in the next round. Meanwhile, Golden Arrows confidently dispatched Sekhukhune United with a 3-1 win on Saturday at the King Zwelithini Stadium, and TS Galaxy required extra time to overcome Orbit College FC 1-0 at the Olympia Park Stadium on Saturday.

Sunday’s fixtures saw more action and upsets. Richards Bay FC put on a dominant display, booting Chippa United with a comprehensive 4-1 victory at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex. In a major clash, Stellenbosch FC eliminated Kaizer Chiefs after a gruelling penalty shootout at the Cape Town Stadium.

The final ticket was punched by the defending champions, Magesi FC, who narrowly survived a five-goal thriller against AmaZulu FC, prevailing 3-2 to keep their title defence alive at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Durban City FC was the first time to book a place in the quarter-finals on Friday as they beat Polokwane City FC 4-1 after extra-time at the Chatsworth Stadium.
