DR Congo forward Cedric Bakambu has remained confident about their qualification chances to the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite losing their last qualifier against Senegal on September 9.
During the matchday eight fixture at Stade des Martyrs, DR Congo suffered a 3-2 defeat against the Lions of Teranga. Despite racing into a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Bakambu and Yoane Wissa, Senegal responded with goals from Papa Gueye, Nicolas Jackson, and Pape Matar Sarr to carry the day.
Senegal have their fate in their own hands, with only DR Congo and Sudan still in with a chance of qualifying from the group. The Senegalese will go through on the second-to-last day if they manage to beat South Sudan and DR Congo fail to overcome Togo.
“I’ve got to admit, I think about it all the time. It really matters, because it could be historic,” Bakambu, who plays for Real Betis, told FIFA.com. “We’re still on track even though we lost against Senegal.
“Where there’s life, there’s hope. It makes no difference if we qualify for the World Cup directly or through the play offs. The target is still the same. It won’t be easy, but we’ll do everything in our power.”
He added: “For me, Senegal are the best team in Africa. You could sense it on the pitch. They know all about playing on the biggest stage in the world. Nobody can say that Senegal didn’t deserve to win. Hats off to them. Just ask any of the Senegalese players – coming and getting a result at the Stade des Martyrs is no mean feat.”
DR Congo’s last qualifying matches will see them face Togo at Stade de Kégué on Friday, before the close their campaign against Sudan at Stade des Martyrs on Tuesday, October 14.
