Celebrated coach Pitso Mosimane has explained the major contributing factor to South Africa’s qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.

Bafana Bafana delivered when it mattered the most, easing to a 3-0 victory over Rwanda on Tuesday to seal their spot at the World Cup finals.

The cause for Hugo Broos’ men was helped by Nigeria’s 4-0 hammering of previous Group C leaders Niger in another match of the group also on Tuesday.

The 2010 World Cup hosts finished on top of the pile, one point ahead of the Super Eagles who will now compete in play-offs.

Bafana Bafana’s qualification, coming after being deducted three points for fielding Teboho Mokoena in a previous game against Lesotho, made the final game against Amavubi dramatic.

Little wonder, excitement is in the air in South African football circles. Mosimane has since added his chorus of the praises for Bafana Bafana.

“Thank you coach Hugo Broos, Helman [Mkhalele], technical team and our players who really gave a gallant fight throughout the qualifiers,” the former Al Ahly manager tweeted.

The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns mentor then explained the secret behind the national team’s success, tracing it to Betway Premiership teams’ participation in CAF interclub competitions.

“Participation of our local teams in the semifinals of CAF Champions League and Confederation has added value to our national team,” he said.

Durban City FC’s veteran mentor Gavin Hunt has also congratulated the national team for the feat. Broos has steered Bafana Bafana back to the World Cup for the first time since 2010 when South Africa hosted the global tournament.
