Ex-Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Keagan Buchanan has formally announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33, drawing the curtain on a decade-long career in the South African top-flight marked by moments of brilliance, big moves, and periods of injury struggle.
Buchanan confirmed the decision late on Thursday via social media, expressing profound gratitude for a journey that saw him rise from the youth ranks of Ajax Cape Town to the biggest stage in the country.
Buchanan’s professional breakthrough came at Bloemfontein Celtic in 2013, where his technical skill and playmaking ability earned him the reputation of a midfield maestro. His impressive form at Siwelele culminated in a highly anticipated move to Kaizer Chiefs at the start of the 2016/17 season.
However, his two-season spell with the Amakhosi proved challenging. Buchanan struggled to secure consistent playing time, managing just 10 appearances across all competitions and failing to register a goal during his tenure at Naturena.
Following his exit from the Glamour Boys, the midfielder successfully reignited his career. He went on to become a key figure for clubs like Maritzburg United and AmaZulu FC, demonstrating the quality that first brought him to prominence.
He last featured in the Betway Premiership with Cape Town Spurs during the 2023/24 season before transitioning to free agency, marking his final professional chapter. Over his career, Buchanan amassed over 150 appearances in the elite league, contributing three goals and 14 assists.

In his retirement statement, Buchanan offered a heartfelt reflection on the game that defined his early life.
“From an 8-year-old kid at Ajax with a dream, to living that dream on pitches across the country – I can only be grateful,” Buchanan shared. “Football has given me everything: memories, lessons, friendships, and moments I’ll carry for life. As this chapter closes, I give all glory to God for every step, every setback, and every comeback… This game shaped me. But most importantly, it prepared me for what’s next.”
The midfielder’s retirement officially closes the book on a player often praised for his vision and passing range, leaving fans to recall a career that, despite the setbacks, firmly established him in the history of the South African Premier Division.
