CAFCL: Rivers United deserved better – Finidi George

Rivers United coach Finidi George insists his Nigerian National Premier Football League (NPFL) side did not deserve to lose 1-0 to Black Bulls FC in Mozambique on Saturday.

In a post-match interview of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round match, the former Super Eagles star insisted that United deserved a point from the game at bare minimum.

“I think it was a very good game,” George said. “We controlled the game. In the first half, we tried to press a little bit very high. We even had one or two chances to score in the first half but that didn’t happen. In the second half, I think that was the only chance they got from a break.”

Why Finidi George believes Rivers United did not deserve to lose

The former Nigeria coach then explained why he thinks the NPFL defending champions deserved better from the first leg match played in Maputo.

“If you look at the overall result, we deserved to, at least, have a draw here, but football being what it is, we didn’t get it but then we have another opportunity next week. I think it is going to be an interesting one with a lot of intensity in the game. Now we are one goal down, we have to see and be bold and see how we can win that game,” George explained.

Who scored for Black Bulls versus Rivers United FC?

The Mozambican champions grabbed the maximum points courtesy of Moctar Diallo’s 50th minute goal at Campo da ABB in Maputo.

Based on what George said, the NPFL holders still believe they can overturn the tables when they welcome the Mozambicans at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium next Sunday in Uyo. The overall winner of the two-legged tie will proceed to the group stages.
