The Phobians walked into the game with no losses in five games and needed the three points to keep the chase on leaders Medeama who were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Samartex on Saturday.
The game was a reunion between Berekum Chelsea coach Samuel Boadu and Hearts of Oak, a team he guided to five trophies in two-and-a-half seasons.
After a goalless first half, Hearts of Oak summoned all energy from their arsenals to shoot ahead courtesy striker, Hamza Issah’s 62nd minute goal.
The record Ghana FA Cup holders controlled the game for most of the second half with Berekum Chelsea managing a few recoveries with some physical play.
The 2000 CAF Champions League winners added the second goal very late in the game with substitute Mawuli Wayo scoring in the final minutes.
