Gold Stars returned to winning ways, halting the unbeaten run of Heart of Lions in a week six Ghana Premier League fixture at the Duns Park in Bibiani on Monday.
The reigning league champions came up against a Heart of Lions side that was unbeaten in five matches and they needed to exhibit their best to knick in all three points.
Gold Stars fired themselves into the lead from the boot of Amon Kotey in the 35th minute with an assist from Samuel Atta Kumi which opened the door to controlling the game in all departments. The first half strike separated the two sides moving into the half time break.
Gold Stars, who represented Ghana in the CAF Champions League returned for the second half with similar energy from the first half, attacking Heart of Lions from all angles and that paid off.
Substitute, Sampson Eduku’s deflected shot left Heart of Lions goalkeeper Lawrence Osei transfixed making the score line 2-0 in the 53rd minute to put the game beyond the visitors.
Heart of Lions however did not rest on their oars as Kwadwo Obeng junior reduced the deficit when a quick exchange between him and Samuel Quansah in Gold Stars area placed him in a pole position to smash in on the 59th minute.
Samuel Atta Kumi earned a penalty for Gold Stars after a composed ball control in Heart of Lions penalty area where he was hacked down before he sent keeper Lawrence Osei the wrong way from the spot to make the score line 3-1 in the 81st minute for the defending champions.
With added time exhausted, Gold Stars claimed a 3-1 victory over Heart of Lions, taking them to nine points from five matches with an outstanding game against Berekum Chelsea to clear on Thursday, October 23 at the Duns Park.
