COSAFA Women’s Championship postponed

Southern Africa’s premier senior women’s football team competition has been deferred to next year, organizers announced.

The Council for Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) executive director Sue Destombes confirmed the postponement of the women’s championship 2025 to early next year “due to the current unavailability of a host.”

“We appreciate the understanding and continued support of all stakeholders as we work to maintain the high standards of Women’s Football within our region,” Destombes said in a statement.

What is new schedule of  COSAFA Women’s Championship?

She added that they hope that the next year’s tournament “will instead serve as vital preparation for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2026.”

“The tournament will move from its usual October/November slot to the first quarter of 2026, with full details to be provided in due course. COSAFA is currently engaging with a potential host for this tournament,” the statement adds.

The 2026 WAFCON finals will take place in Morocco from March 17-April 3 and will also act as the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The Copper Queens are the defending champions of the regional competition. Last year, Zambia beat South Africa 4-3 on post-match penalties after a barren draw in regulation time of the final.
