Zizo magic stretches Al Ahly winning streak to six games

Al Ahly are top of Egypt’s Nile League courtesy of a Man of the Match performance from Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” during their 2-1 victory over Al Ittihad on Wednesday.

The Egypt national team attacker assisted Achraf Bencharki to give the home side the lead in the 15th minute at the Cairo International Stadium. Zizo then added a goal himself to double the advantage soon after the hour mark, converting a penalty kick following a handball in the Al Ittihad penalty area.

Former Al Ahly youth graduate Fady Farid pulled a goal back for visitors Ittihad to provide some suspense. An opportunity appeared to open up for the Alexandria club when Ahmed Nabil Koka received a second yellow card. However, Karim El Deeb’s expulsion brought the match to a 10-v-10 affair and the hosts were able to hold on for three points.

After a nightmare start to the 2025-26 season, the reigning Egyptian club champions are finding their form. Interim coach Emad El Nahhas provided stability following the sacking of José Riveiro and newly installed head coach Jess Thorup now has two wins from two matches with a victory on his domestic league debut to make it six consecutive triumphs in all competitions.

Now Al Ahly will look to confirm their place in the group stage of the CAF Champions League when they host Burundian club Aigle Noir for the second leg of their duel in the final qualifying round. The African giants won 1-0 in Burundi last Saturday to put themselves in a strong position.
