Injury crisis deepens at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has delivered a mixed bag of injury updates, confirming a severe long-term layoff for defender Mothobi Mvala while offering hope for the swift return of star players Themba Zwane and Iqraam Rayners.

The Brazilians have endured an inconsistent start to the 2025/26 season, marked by early eliminations from the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup—a poor run of form that has put the Portuguese tactician under significant pressure from sections of the club’s faithful.

Cardoso, who recently secured some breathing room with a dominant 5-1 CAF Champions League victory over Remo Stars, admitted the team has been hampered by setbacks to several key first-team members.

Mvala Out For The Long Haul

Addressing the most serious concern, Cardoso confirmed that seasoned international Mothobi Mvala recently underwent surgery.

“Unfortunately, we have more severe questions with Mothobi Mvala, who went for surgery last week,” Cardoso confirmed at Chloorkop during Sundowns’ media open day on Thursday. “It’s the most challenging situation we have in terms of a long-term recovery for him.”

The coach stressed that the team dedicated their recent victory to the defender, hoping to channel his spirit on the pitch during his absence.

Zwane, Rayners, and Others Nearing Return

However, the news was more optimistic concerning several other sidelined stars.

Themba Zwane, a crucial asset in the Sundowns midfield, is on the mend. Cardoso stressed caution with the playmaker, saying: “It’s not something he will finish in one week, but we don’t expect it to take long. We need to be careful… we must bring him in the best condition so that he can be available to us.”

The coach also confirmed the impending return of forward Iqraam Rayners. Rayners had been sidelined following his return from international duty, but the medical all-clear means he is now easing back into the squad.

“Thanks to the doctors and exams he did, we were able to see that there are no more cardiac issues that will take him out of his career, so it’s a minor thing. He’s now starting to train with the team, and we should expect him to be available again,” said Cardoso.

In addition, the club expects Zuko Mdunyelwa to fully integrate back into training, while Malibongwe Khoza—who suffered a minor ankle injury—is also set for a timely return, easing the depth issues facing the reigning champions.

Sundowns will be hoping for the quick return of their injured players to steady their domestic campaign and maintain momentum in the CAF Champions League.
