FCB Big Bullets coach Peter Mponda has made a candid admission that his side paid the price for an abject showing against Mighty Wanderers in Blantyre on Sunday.
The TNM Super League pacesetters had won in five straight games going into the match at Kamuzu Stadium. However, a catalogue of unforced defensive lapses and suspect fielding culminated in their 3-0 loss to the Nomads.
In a post-match interview at Kamuzu Stadium, the People’s Team tactician insisted that no amount of excuse would explain his side’s heavy defeat to the Blantyre arch rivals in the Super League championship race.
“They [Wanderers] played well, and deserved to win,” Mponda told Bullets’ media team. “The way we played today, I don’t think we deserved anything. The performance was below par. We need to work on these mistakes before our next fixture.
“I wouldn’t say it was a lack of confidence because we have been winning games, and the morale has been high. We were simply poor. We did not show up in a big game and we paid the price.”
Adam Wallace’s strike and fellow substitute Blessings Singini’s brace won it for Mpinganjira’s side. The Nomads moved to within a point of Bullets who have played one game more.
The league leaders have now lost four games in 21 games and they have nine matches to win the league championship. Wanderers remain unbeaten in 20 league matches, their cause only undermined by six draws compared to just one for the rivals.
The leaders Bullets went into the game boasting a four-point lead over the second-placed Nomads. However, the heavy loss reduced the cushion to just one point. Wanderers can even go top if they make use of the game they have in hand. Bob Mpinganjira’s outfit face Songwe Border United on Wednesday.
