Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has singled out attackers Etiosa Ighodaro and Glody Lilepo for special commendation following their instrumental roles in securing the club’s passage to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.
The Glamour Boys delivered a commanding 3-1 victory in the second leg, comfortably advancing after a goalless stalemate against AS Simba in the initial away fixture. This triumph marks a significant return for Chiefs to the continental group stages after an 11-year absence.
Speaking during the post-match, the Burundian mentor highlighted the tactical flexibility the two forwards bring to the squad, suggesting they offer a crucial variety of offensive threats that the team has been seeking.
“We needed to establish a front combination that could provide that extra dimension—players capable of the decisive pass, delivering quality set-pieces, and having the range to take shots,” Kaze explained.
He specifically praised Ighodaro’s presence and physicality, particularly in aerial battles, stating, “To have a player like Ighodaro in the box, a striker who is physical and dominant in the air, really helps us.”
Lilepo, meanwhile, was lauded for his contrasting attributes. “The speed of Lilepo gives us different options,” Kaze added, emphasising the value of having diverse profiles to break down stubborn defences.
Beyond the starting pair, Kaze also acknowledged the valuable contributions from substitutes Asanele Velebayi and Lebohang Maboe, who entered the fray late in the game.
“They [Velebayi and Maboe] came on and performed very well,” he stated. “These are the types of games where, once you have secured a significant advantage, it becomes easier to introduce new players to build their confidence and help them gain match momentum.”
Chiefs will now look ahead to the group stage draw as they attempt to mount a serious challenge for their first-ever continental trophy.
