CAFCL: President Ruto commends Nairobi United for reaching group stage

Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto has penned a congratulatory message to Kenyan Premier League side Nairobi United for securing their place in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The promoted FKF Premier League side wrote a new chapter in Kenyan football history after securing a place in the CAF competition group stage in their very first attempt. The Nairobi-based outfit triumphed 7-6 on penalties against Tunisia’s Etoile Sportive du Sahel (ESS) after a 2-2 aggregate score over two legs.

United earned the right to represent Kenya in continental football after winning the 2025 Mozzart Bet Cup, a victory that also capped a sensational domestic campaign in which they achieved promotion to the SportPesa League.

Below is the full statement from Ruto;

“The people of Kenya stand immensely proud of Nairobi United Football Club for their historic qualification to the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.

This remarkable achievement forged in courage, discipline, and unyielding fortitude —has ignited the spirit of our nation and reaffirmed Kenya’s rightful place on Africa’s football map.

By triumphing over Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel, one of the continent’s most formidable clubs, Nairobi United have proven that belief, unity, and teamwork can indeed conquer giants.

We celebrate every player, coach, manager, and fan whose passion and commitment have carried the team to this defining moment in our sporting history. As Kenya’s sole continental representatives, Nairobi United now bear the nation’s flag with honour, pride, and promise.

We wish them renewed strength, focus, and confidence as they step onto the group-stage stage. Hongera Nairobi United. You have made history; and you have made us proud.”

In their first preliminary round fixture, United faced Uganda’s NEC FC. The first leg in Uganda at the Hamz Stadium ended 2-2, before a 1-1 draw at Nyayo Stadium saw them advance on the away goals rule.
