Glody Lilepo was instrumental in securing Kaizer Chiefs’ 3-1 victory over AS Simba in the CAF Confederation Cup, but his standout performance was overshadowed by an injury that forced him off at halftime.
The 27-year-old striker was in blistering form at Dobsonville Stadium, scoring Amakhosi’s third goal and setting up September signing Etiosa Ighodaro for his first goal in the famous black and gold. The promising link-up play between the two attackers offered a glimpse of the lethal partnership Chiefs fans have been craving.
Unfortunately, the DR Congo international’s stellar 45 minutes ended abruptly due to an ankle injury. This latest fitness issue is a major headache for the technical team, as the club’s injury list, which already includes fellow striker Khanyisa Mayo, continues to grow.
Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze offered a cautious update, expressing hope that the injury is not severe:
“We will have to discuss with the doctor, but it was a knock which I think shouldn’t be very bad… If it’s a knock, probably one or two days with ice, I think he should be ready to go on Friday against Durban City FC.”
Should Lilepo be ruled out for Friday’s Betway Premiership fixture against Durban City in Moses Mabhida, it could pave the way for a debut appearance this season for either Tashreeq Morris or new signing Luke Baartman.
Chiefs, currently fourth on the PSL table, face former coach Gavin Hunt, whose Durban City side sits just one point behind them. The potential absence of Lilepo adds a layer of complexity to what is already shaping up to be a tight, crucial contest.
